Let Freedom Ring

On this Martin Luther King day, I think about how far our country
has come thanks to the effort of Dr. Martin Luther King. It would
seem to the majority of middle class Americans that prejudice is a
rare occurrence but to those stopped and questioned for no reason
or who watch others clutch their purses in fear of their presence,
racism isn't an abstract - it's handcuffs that belong on someone
else's hands and the title of "enemy combatant." This day we must
take the time to remember that Dr. King's work is not done. We, the
Democratic Party, must continue the efforts we bravely took on in
the 60's. We, the Democratic Party lost voters because we signed
the Civil Rights Act, as we will again because we tirelessly fight
for the rights of terror suspects. It was and is fundamentally
about our values as Americans. We must demonstrate the value of
equality in our society - both figuratively and literally. I
suspect Dr. King would, if he were still alive, would still be
doing so today.
