New College Democrats Guiding Principles and Purposes

On Solidarity

As Democrats, we embrace a variety of (often conflicting) opinions regarding the most practical approach to progressive politics. This being the case, the final end toward which we work (our vision of the just state) must be that which unites us, or our identity and unity will be purely negative and other-oriented. We cannot move forward as long as our identity is based solely on the fact that we are “not Republicans”. This understanding is essential to our organizational policy. Practical differences are bound to arise within the membership, and decisions will be made by the leadership that not everyone will agree with. However, in order to maintain an identity that is not merely a negative relation to the Republican Party, solidarity and civility among the membership must be maintained. This is of utmost importance, as the constitution makes clear. Unless we all can accept that any differences which may arise among us are merely practical, and that we are all in-fact fighting for the same end, there can be no New College Democrats.

On Purposes*

Beyond the general principles and goals outlined in the constitution, New College Democrats have a specific charge. Our charge is to stimulate the general political and social awareness of the New College community (and, when appropriate and feasible, the surrounding area). This includes, but is not limited to, getting out the vote, publicizing local and national political issues of interest, organizing consciousness raising events, organizing protests and demonstrations, and fighting political apathy wherever it appears.

* Further New College Democrats guiding principles can be found in the constitution.
